iPhoneThe iPhone is a multimedia, Internet-enabled mobile phone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It has a multi-touch screen with virtual keyboard and buttons. The iPhone's functions include those of a camera phone and a portable media player ("iPod"), in addition to text messaging and visual voicemail. It also offers Internet services including e-mail, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity. The iPhone is a quad-band mobile phone that uses the GSM standard, hence has international capability. It supports the Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) technology for higher speed and reliability.History of the iPhoneThe genesis of the iPhone began with Apple CEO Steve Jobs's direction that Apple engineers investigate touch-screens. At the time he had been considering having Apple work on tablet PCs.[4] Comments made by Jobs in April 2003 at the "D: All Things Digital" executive conference expressed his belief that tablet PCs and traditional PDAs were not good choices as high-demand markets for Apple to enter, despite many requests made to him that Apple create another PDA. He did believe that cell phones were going to become important devices for portable information access. On January 9, 2007, Jobs announced the iPhone at the Macworld convention, receiving substantial media attention,[5] and on June 11, 2007 announced at the Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference that the iPhone would support third-party applications using the Safari engine on the device. Third-parties would create the Web 2.0 applications and users would access them via the Internet.[6] On October 17, 2007 Apple announced that an iPhone software development kit would be made available in February 2008.[7][8] Spanish mobile operator Telefonica announced on their technology blog that they expect to be shipping 3G iPhones by May 2008.[9] The iPhone normally prevents access to its media player and web features unless it has also been activated as a phone with an authorized carrier. On July 3, 2007, Jon Lech Johansen reported on his blog that he had successfully bypassed this requirement and unlocked the iPhone's other features with a combination of custom software and modification of the iTunes binary. He published the software and offsets for others to use.[10] On November 21, 2007 T-Mobile announced that due to litigation commenced against them by thier competitor Vodaphone, which resulted in a preliminary injunction preventing T-Mobile from locking the SIM card to T-Mobile in Germany. It will sell the phone "unlocked" and will offer the iPhone without a T-Mobile contract for 999 euros ($1,478) at its shops to customers in germany until the court renders a decision.[11] Apple announced in their 2007 Q3 sales report and conference call that they sold 270,000 iPhones in the first 30 hours on launch weekend.[12] AT&T reported 146,000 iPhones activated in the same time period.[13] Apple anticipated selling their millionth iPhone in the first full quarter of availability,[14] and 10 million by the end of fiscal 2008.[15] On September 10, 2007, Apple announced sales of 1 million iPhones.[16] This was followed by Apple's Q4 announcement on October 22, 2007 which put total iPhone sales at 1.39 million (Apple having sold 1.12 million in their 4th Quarter).[17]iphone FeaturesThe iPhone allows conferencing, call holding, call merging, caller ID, and integration with other cellular network features and iPhone functions. For example, a playing song fades out when the user receives a call. Once the call is ended the music fades back in. Voice dialing is not supported by the iPhone. The iPhone includes a Visual Voicemail feature allowing users to view a list of current voicemail messages on-screen without having to call into their voicemail. Unlike most other systems, messages can be listened to and deleted in a non-chronological order by choosing any message from an on-screen list. AT&T modified their voicemail infrastructure to accommodate this new feature designed by Apple. A ringtone feature, introduced in the US on September 5, 2007, but not yet available in all countries where the iPhone has been released, allows users to create custom ringtones from their purchased iTunes music for an additional fee, the same price of a song. The ringtones can be from 3 to 30 seconds in length of any part of a song, can include fading in and out, can pause from half a second to five seconds when looped, and never expire. All customizing can be done in iTunes, and the synced ringtones can also be used for alarms on the iPhone. Apple has released a video explaining many of iPhone's features through a series of demonstrations.[18]iphone MultimediaThe layout of the music library differs from previous iPods, with the sections divided more clearly alphabetically, and with a larger font. Similar to previous iPods, the iPhone can sort its media library by songs, artists, albums, videos, playlists, genres, composers, podcasts, audiobooks, and compilations. Cover Flow, like that on iTunes, shows the different album covers in a scroll-through photo library. Scrolling is achieved by swiping a finger across the screen. Like the fifth generation iPods introduced in 2005, the iPhone can play video, allowing users to watch TV shows and films. Unlike other image-related content, video on the iPhone plays only in the landscape orientation, when the phone is turned sideways. Double tapping switches between wide-screen and fullscreen video playback. The iPhone allows users to purchase and download songs from the iTunes Store directly to their iPhone over Wi-Fi, but not over the cellular data network.[19]iphone Web connectivityThe iPhone is able to access the World Wide Web via a modified version of the Safari web browser when connected to a Wi-Fi or an EDGE network. It is not able to utilize AT&T's 3G or AT&T's HSDPA network. Steve Jobs has stated 3G would need to become more widespread and much more energy efficient before it's included in the iPhone.[20][21] By default, the iPhone will ask to join newly discovered Wi-Fi networks and prompt for the password when required, while also supporting manually joining closed Wi-Fi networks.[22] When Wi-Fi is active, it will automatically switch from the EDGE network to any nearby previously approved Wi-Fi network.[23] Before the launch, some reviewers found the EDGE network "excruciatingly slow," with the iPhone taking as long as 100 seconds to download the Yahoo! home page for the first time.[24] Immediately before the launch the observed speed of the network increased to almost 200 kbit/s.[25] This is probably due to the new "Fine EDGE" upgrades AT&T has been making to their network prior to the launch.[26] The EDGE network does benefit iPhone users by providing greater availability than 3G, as 3G continues its expansion to most major cities in the United States.[27] Some countries other than the U.S. have very little EDGE infrastructure in place. For example, the United Kingdom's EDGE infrastructure amount to less that 30-percent. As a result, many users outside major cities will have to browse the Internet on GPRS. The web browser displays full web pages as opposed to simplified pages as on most non-smartphones. The iPhone does not support Flash or Java technology.[28][29] Web pages may be viewed in portrait or landscape mode and supports automatic zooming by pinching together or spreading apart fingertips on the screen, or by double-tapping text or images.[30] Apple developed an iPhone application for accessing Google's maps service in map or satellite form, a list of search results, or directions between two locations, while providing optional real-time traffic information. During the product's announcement, Jobs demonstrated this feature by searching for nearby Starbucks locations and then placing a prank call to one with a single tap.[4][31] Though Flash isn't supported in Safari on the iPhone, Apple also developed a separate application to view YouTube videos on the iPhone.iphone E-mailThe iPhone also features an e-mail program that supports HTML e-mail, which enables the user to embed photos in an e-mail message. PDF, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel attachments to mail messages can be viewed on the phone.[32] Yahoo! is currently the only e-mail provider offering a free Push-IMAP e-mail service similar to that on a BlackBerry for the iPhone; IMAP and POP3 mail standards are also supported, including Microsoft Exchange[33] and Kerio MailServer.[34] However, there is currently no search support. The iPhone will sync e-mail account settings over from Apple's own Mail application, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Entourage, or can be manually configured using the device's Settings tool. With the correct settings, the e-mail program can check many IMAP or POP3-enabled web based accounts such as Gmail, .Mac mail, and AOL.[35] Others The iPhone features a built in 2.0 megapixel camera, without a flash, located on the back for still digital photos, but does not support video recording. It also includes software that allows the user to upload, view, and e-mail photos. The user zooms in and out of photos by "unpinching" and "pinching" them through the multi-touch interface. The software interacts with iPhoto on the Mac and Photoshop in Windows. The built-in Bluetooth 2.x+EDR supports wireless earpieces (which requires the HSP profile), but notably does not support stereo audio (requires A2DP), laptop tethering (requires DUN and SPP), or the OBEX file transfer protocol (requires FTP, GOEP, and OPP). Text messages are presented chronologically in a mailbox format similar to Mail, which places all text from recipients together with replies. Text messages are displayed in speech bubbles (similar to iChat) under each recipient's name. The iPhone does not support message forwarding, drafts, delivery reports, instant messaging, MMS, multi-recipient SMS, or copy/cut/paste capability.[36]iphone InterfaceThe display responds to three sensors: a proximity sensor that shuts off the display and touchscreen when the iPhone is brought near the face to save battery power and to prevent spurious inputs from the user's face and ears, an ambient light sensor that adjusts the display brightness which in turn saves battery power, and a 3-axis accelerometer,[37] which senses the orientation of the phone and changes the screen accordingly. Web browsing and music playing support three orientations, while videos play in only one widescreen orientation. A single "home" hardware button below the display brings up the main menu. Subselections are made via the touchscreen. The iPhone utilizes a full-paged display, with context-specific submenus at the top and/or bottom of each page, sometimes depending on screen orientation. Detail pages display the equivalent of a "Back" button to go up one menu. The iPhone has three physical switches on its sides: sleep / wake, volume up / down, ringer on / off. All other multimedia and phone operations are done via the touch screen. The iPhone interface enables the user to move the content itself up or down by a touch-drag motion of the finger, much as one would freely slide or flick a playing card across a table with a finger. Similarly, scrolling through a long list in a menu works as if the list is pasted on the outer surface of a wheel: the wheel can be "spun" by sliding a finger over the display from bottom to top (or vice versa). In either case, the object continues to move based on the flicking motion of the finger, slowly decelerating as if affected by friction. In this way, the interface simulates the physics of 3D objects, giving it a real world feel. The photo album and web page magnifications are examples of multi-touch sensing. It is possible to zoom in and out of web pages and photos by placing two fingers (e.g. thumb and forefinger) on the screen and spreading them farther apart or closer together, as if stretching or squeezing the image. As can be expected from multi-touch sensing, the two fingers don't have to be from the same hand.iphone Text inputFor text input, the device implements a virtual keyboard on the touchscreen. It has automatic spell checking and correction, predictive word capabilities, and a dynamic dictionary that learns new words. The predictive word capabilities have been integrated with the dynamic virtual keyboard so that users will not have to be extremely accurate when typing—i.e. touching the edges of the desired letter or nearby letters on the keyboard will be predictively corrected when possible. The keys are somewhat larger and spaced further apart when in landscape mode (currently, only using Safari). Not focusing more on texting has been considered a chief weakness of the iPhone, while at the same time the virtual keyboard is a bold step and a worthwhile risk.[28] David Pogue of The New York Times and Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal both tested the iPhone for two weeks and found learning to use it initially difficult, although eventually usable. Pogue stated use was "frustrating" at first, but "once you stop stressing about each individual letter and just plow ahead, speed and accuracy pick up considerably." After five days of use, Mossberg "was able to type on it as quickly and accurately as he could on the Palm Treo he has used for years," and considered the keyboard a "nonissue." Both found that the typo-correcting feature of the iPhone was the key to using the virtual keyboard successfully.[24][38]According to The Wall Street Journal, the iPhone is manufactured on contract in the Shenzhen factory of the Taiwanese company Hon Hai.[39] Touch screen The 3.5 in liquid crystal display (320ª480 px at 160 ppi) HVGA touch screen topped with optical-quality, scratch-resistant glass[40] is specifically created for use with a finger, or multiple fingers for multi-touch sensing. Because the screen is a capacitive touch screen, no stylus is needed, nor can one be used.[41][20] Bare skin is a requirement; users wearing gloves would have to remove them to use the touchpad,[42] unless they are wearing electrically conductive gloves.[43] The user interface also features other visual effects, such as horizontally sliding sub-selections and co-selections from right and left, vertically sliding system menus from the bottom (e.g. favorites, keyboard), and menus and widgets that turn around to allow settings to be configured on their back sides. iphone AudioThe iPhone's headphones are similar to those of current iPods, but also incorporate a microphone. Calls can be answered and ended by squeezing a bud, toggling the microphone. The 3.5 mm TRS connector for the headphones is located on the top left corner (as seen from front upright). Wireless earpieces that use Bluetooth technology to communicate with the iPhone are sold separately. The loudspeaker is used both for handsfree operations and media playback, but does not support voice recording. With the iPhone firmware update 1.1.1, released in late September 2007, video can be output from the headset jack using a three-way jack plug. Component video at up to 576i and stereo audio can also be output from the dock connector using the Apple Component AV Cable.[44]iphone BatteryThe iPhone features a built-in rechargeable battery that is not intended to be user-replaceable, similar to existing iPods. If the battery prematurely reaches the end of its life time, the phone can be returned to Apple and replaced for free while still in warranty,[45] one year at purchase and extended to two years with AppleCare. The cost of having Apple provide a new battery and replace it when the iPhone is out of warranty is US$79 and US$6.95 for shipping.[46] The battery is stated to be capable of providing up to seven hours of video, six hours of web browsing, or eight hours of talk time (depending on configuration). The battery life for music playing is stated to be 24 hours.[40] The battery also allows for up to 250 hours of standby time. Apple's site says that the battery life "is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 400 full charge and discharge cycles,"[47] which turns out to be the same as for the iPod batteries. When the battery reaches only 80% capacity, it would be providing approximately 5.6 hours of video, 4.8 hours of web browsing, 6.4 hours of talk time, or 19.2 hours of music playing, depending on configuration. The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights, a consumer advocate group, has sent a complaint to Apple and AT&T over the fee that consumers have to pay to get the battery replaced.[48] Though the battery replacement service and its pricing was not made known to buyers until the day the product was launched,[48][49] a similar service had been well established for the iPods by Apple and various third party service providers.iphone SIM cardThe SIM card is located in a slot at the top of the device,[18] and the device is activated through iTunes.[50] The iPhone does not contain a memory card slotiphone SoftwareAn optimized version of the OS X operating system (without unnecessary components) runs on the iPhone, although differences between the operating system running on Macs and the iPhone have not been officially explained in detail. The iPhone's version of OS X includes the software component "Core Animation" from Mac OS X v10.5 which is responsible for the smooth animations used in its user interface. The operating system takes up considerably less than half a GB of the device's total 8 GB storage.[51] It will be capable of supporting bundled and future applications from Apple. The iPhone is managed with iTunes version 7.3 or later, which is compatible with Mac OS X version 10.4.10 or later, and 32-bit Windows XP or Vista.[52] The iPhone's CPU is an ARM-based processor instead of the x86 and PowerPC processors used in Apple's computers. This means applications can not simply be copied from Mac OS X and have to be written and compiled specifically for the iPhone. Additionally, the Safari web browser supports web applications written with AJAX, which, by design, are cross-platform applications.iphone ApplicationsThere are several applications located on the "Home" screen: Text (SMS messaging), Calendar, Photos, Camera, YouTube, Stocks, Maps (Google Maps), Weather, Clock, Calculator, Notes, Settings, and iTunes. Four other applications delineate the iPhone's main purposes: Phone, Mail, Safari, and iPod.[53] The YouTube application streams videos over Wi-Fi and/or EDGE after encoding them using QuickTime's H.264 codec, to which YouTube has converted about 10,000 videos. They are expected to convert the entire catalog by the third quarter of 2007. As a result, the YouTube application on iPhone can currently only view a certain selection of videos from the site.[54] Also, because YouTube displays videos using Flash, the iPhone can only view videos through the YouTube application as opposed to accessing the YouTube website using Safari. At WWDC 2007 on June 11, 2007 Apple announced that the iPhone will support third-party "applications" via the Safari web browser that share the look and feel of the iPhone interface. The applications must be created in Ajax or JavaScript to maintain device security.[55] The iPhone cannot officially install full programs from anyone but Apple,[56] although Steve Jobs has hinted that future third-party applications are in development.[57][58] Dozens of homebrew applications are now available[59], although they are completely unsupported by Apple. Such apps could be broken by any software update, but Apple will not design software updates specifically to break native apps other than apps that perform SIM unlocking.[60] On October 17, 2007, Steve Jobs, in an open letter posted to Apple's "Hot News" weblog, announced that a software development kit (SDK) would be made available to third-party developers in February 2008. Due to security concerns and Jobs's praise of Nokia's digital signature system, it is suggested that Apple will adopt a similar method. The SDK will also allow application development for the iPod touch.[61]iphone Software updatesApple provides updates to the iPhone's operating system through iTunes, in a similar fashion to the way that iPods are updated, and touts this as an advantage compared to other cell phones.[62] Security patches as well as new and improved features, such as a mobile chat client, Flash support, and voice recording, may be released in this fashion.[63] The first iPhone software update, 1.0.1, was released on July 31, 2007[64] to patch an exploit, discovered on July 23, 2007. It allowed hackers to take complete control of the iPhone via Wi-Fi connection or by luring a person to a website with that included malicious code. Once the hacker had control of the iPhone they could download the entire content of the iPhone, make phone calls, or turn the phone into a covert listening device.[65] The first full update, 1.1.1, was released on September 27, 2007. In addition to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, this update also adds home button shortcuts and other features previously released in the iPod touch.[66] The update significantly changed the iPhone's software and improved stability of its applications. Unsurprisingly, such significant changes also made it incompatible with previous unsupported hacks for modifying the system software or installing third party applications.iphone updatesThe updates that have been released are: 1.0.1 Safari security update 1.0.2 Fixed Bugs 1.1.1 iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store Louder speakerphone and receiver volume Home button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls Spacebar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape modes Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be reordered Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar Support for TV out Preferences to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally New Passcode lock time intervals Adjustable alert volume 1.1.2 Battery charge level shown in iTunes International language & keyboard support Patched the TIFF exploit Adds custom Ringtone field Fixed Bugsiphone SpecificationsThe specifications as listed on Apple's website are:[67] Screen size: 8.9 cm (3.5 in) Screen resolution: 320ª480 pixels at 160 ppi Input method: Multi-touch screen interface (the "Home" button is the iPhone's only physical front panel button) Operating System: OS X Storage: 8 GB flash memory (originally: 4 or 8 GB choice) Quad band GSM (GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900) Wi-Fi (802.11g), EDGE and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR 2 megapixel camera Built-in rechargeable, non-removable battery with up to 8 hours of talk, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback, and up to 24 hours of audio playback, lasting over 250 hours on standby.[40] Size: 115ª61ª11.6 mm (4.5ª2.4ª0.46 in) Weight: 135 g (4.8 oz) Digital SAR of 0.974 W/kg[68][69] An analysis of the iPhone's firmware has revealed that the main Samsung chip (designated S5L8900) contains an ARM 1176 processor, together with a PowerVR MBX 3D graphics co-processor.[70]iphone Intellectual propertyApple has filed more than 300 patents related to the technology behind the iPhone.[71][72] LG Electronics claimed the iPhone's design was copied from the LG Prada. Woo-Young Kwak, head of LG Mobile Handset R&D Center, said at a press conference, “We consider that Apple copied Prada phone after the design was unveiled when it was presented in the iF Design Award and won the prize in September 2006.”[73] On September 3, 1993, Infogear filed for the U.S. trademark "I PHONE"[74] and on March 20, 1996 applied for the trademark "IPhone".[75] "I Phone" was registered in March 1998,[74] and "IPhone" was registered in 1999.[75] Since then, the I PHONE mark has been abandoned.[74] Infogear's trademarks cover "communications terminals comprising computer hardware and software providing integrated telephone, data communications and personal computer functions" (1993 filing),[74] and "computer hardware and software for providing integrated telephone communication with computerized global information networks" (1996 filing).[76] Infogear released a telephone with an integrated web browser under the name iPhone in 1998.[77] In 2000, Infogear won an infringement claim against the owners of the iphones.com domain name.[78] In June 2000, Cisco Systems acquired Infogear, including the iPhone trademark.[79] On December 18, 2006 they released a range of re-branded Voice over IP (VoIP) sets under the name iPhone.[80] In October 2002, Apple applied for the "iPhone" trademark in the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, and the European Union. A Canadian application followed in October 2004 and a New Zealand application in September 2006. As of October 2006 only the Singapore and Australian applications had been granted. In September 2006, a company called Ocean Telecom Services applied for an "iPhone" trademark in the United States, United Kingdom and Hong Kong, following a filing in Trinidad and Tobago.[81] As the Ocean Telecom trademark applications use exactly the same wording as Apple's New Zealand application, it is assumed that Ocean Telecom is applying on behalf of Apple.[82] The Canadian application was opposed in August 2005 by a Canadian company called Comwave who themselves applied for the trademark three months later. Comwave have been selling VoIP devices called iPhone since 2004.[79] Shortly after Steve Jobs' January 9, 2007 announcement that Apple would be selling a product called iPhone in June 2007, Cisco issued a statement that it had been negotiating trademark licensing with Apple and expected Apple to agree to the final documents that had been submitted the night before.[83] On January 10, 2007 Cisco announced it had filed a lawsuit against Apple over the infringement of the trademark iPhone, seeking an injunction in federal court to prohibit Apple from using the name.[84] More recently, Cisco claimed that the trademark lawsuit was a "minor skirmish" that was not about money, but about interoperability.[85] On February 2, 2007, Apple and Cisco announced that they had agreed to temporarily suspend litigation while they hold settlement talks,[86] and subsequently announced on February 20, 2007 that they had reached an agreement. Both companies will be allowed to use the "iPhone" name[87] in exchange for "exploring interoperability" between their security, consumer, and business communications products.[88] The iPhone's touch interface has been compared by some media to the HTC Touch,[89][90][91][92] which also features a touchscreen designed for fingers, although it can also be used with a stylus and lacks multi-touch. Another product that has been compared to the iPhone is the MyOrigo MyDevice, which was released in 2003, and like the iPhone, featured a touchscreen and accelerometer.[93]iphone Headphone socketThe headphone socket on the iPhone is slightly into the phone. As such, only specific earphones can fit (otherwise one would require an adaptor which would degrade the sound quality). Sim lock The iPhone like many other phones on contracts, are locked to their service provider (such as AT&T, Orange or T-Mobile). However, Apple has been extremely protective of this lock, even disabling unlocked phones from making or receiving calls. These phones were called by various blogs and media as "iBricks". Vodaphone complained to the German courts that T-Mobile was being uncompetitive by locking the iPhone to the T-Mobile network. T-Mobile argued that it was the only service provider with EDGE in Germany, but the courts still forced T-Mobile to sell iPhones unlocked and available without a contract. There are many programs available on the internet that are able to unlock (and also relock in case Apple decides to disable calling again) the iPhones. This is a grey area in U.S. law since there is an exception in the DCMA to allow unlocking phones. However, it is perfectly legal is the majority of other countries. Application support At the launch, Apple outright refused to allow outside developers access to the iPhone. Even Java was not available. As such, many programs became available to sidetrack the software protections to allow the installation of non-Apple applications. Apple has later said that APIs will be available in February 2008iphone uk“The German unit of Vodafone Group PLC has obtained a restraining order against Deutsche Telekom AG’s T-Mobile unit prohibiting the German telecommunications giant from selling Apple Inc.’s iPhone in Germany,” Stefan Mechnig reports for Dow Jones Newswires. “Vodafone is questioning Deutsche Telekom’s iPhone sales practices [regarding to] the iPhone’s exclusive use in T-Mobile’s network and the use of the device being limited to certain fees within T- Mobile’s subscription offerings,” Mechnig reports. Vodafone isn’t generally opposed to T-Mobile’s exclusivity contract with Apple, but wants to have these new sales practices examined… The restraining order doesn’t aim at a total sales stop,” Mechnig reportsAs much as you may like your iPhone and Apple’s products in general, there’s still money to be made and trends to be learned in tracking user data. Over at Uneasy Silence, the boys have found code strings between the Stock and Weather widgets that send data back to a specialized server URL which allows user information to be collected. When the widgets perform a query an IMEI is handed off to Apple’s servers: This let[s] Apple knows which app you are using when connecting with your iPhone. Obviously, they know the IP address you were using, the stocks companies you are interested [in], and so they can track down their customers all around the world. This also proves that there are probably other apps that do the same. Weather.app is also acting the same way. (Offset 13AE0) Any attempts to modify the URL to exclude the IMEI information will not allow you to retrieve any information in the “Stocks” and “Weather” apps. It is still unknown if any other applications leak information to Apple HQ. Unfortunately, the user base seems to have agreed to surrender this information when it complied with the end user license agreement and thus all kinds of information can be collected and used beyond serial numbers, date of purchase and information relating to a service or support issue. Filed Under iPhone UK News, General iPhone News | 2 Comments Thanks to Alan for the potential heads up on this one. It seems that certain people are getting phone calls claiming to be from either O2, the O2 Security Team or CPW all making rather dubious attempts of trying to get you to enable insurance on your iPhone and asking you to confirm your bank details. We would advise that you DO NOT give out any of your details and hang up and call O2 direct. I have my iPhone insured by O2 and it only costs me £7.50 a month. If you have any issues regarding your iPhone Insurance or you want to enable it - then YOU should call O2 direct and if you do get any calls regarding your insurance, YOU call them back before giving any details. DO NOT ask them for a contact number, use the customer service number on the O2 website: criticism for the iPhoneMicrosoft’s Zune division chief J Allard has a mixture of praise and criticism for the iPhone as his company prepares to compete more effectively with its own software, an interview reveals. He argues that it is Apple’s attention to the design of the cellphone as a whole rather than its connection to the iPod that is pushing sales, and that it represents a step back for the company in terms of ergonomics for music playback. “It’s a lousy iPod,” Allard explains. “You can’t skip a track without looking at it. You can’t go running with the thing.” Nonetheless, the device is the first cellphone to provide a strong browsing experience and is both “beautiful” and “simple” compared to most other phones, he notes. It may also have a unique side-benefit for Windows Mobile as it will force carriers to “check their ego at the door” and allow handset designers to have more control over the final output rather than limiting hardware and software to what suits the carrier’s profit levels. Microsoft’s response will be in part to integrate features of the Zune into Windows Mobile, according to Allard. Although a Zune phone is unlikely, he notes that core aspects of the internally developed music player will filter into the media and calling features of the portable OS. The Redmond firm also vows to “never say never” to producing its own cellphone if the market dictates that working with third-parties alone proves unsuccessful. “If we can put the customer first, we prefer to do it with partners. We didn’t create the Zune because we were dying to get into the hardware business and take inventory risk. We felt we had to do it,” he says. “Windows was incredible. We got to create most of the magic and take none of the financial risk. History isn’t going to repeat that with consumer goods.”3G-capable iPhoneA mobile software developer named SevenClick alleges that Spain’s primary cellular carrier, Telefonica, expects a 3G-capable iPhone in May. The development team, whose report has since been echoed by the national paper El Pais, claims to have spoken with a principal manager at Telefonica who explained why Spain is not included in the first wave of European launches for the Apple handset. Much of the delay stems from contract negotiation and supply issues, according to the allegations. If true, Telefonica has had no objections to a late 2007 release but has been relegated to a spring release once it became clear supply would not allow more than France, Germany, and the UK to participate in the first release. The carrier also purportedly aims to lower proposed revenue sharing deals that would see Apple collect as much as 30 percent of the revenue from each subscriber. While the claims are not directly verified and should be treated with caution, Telefonica is the parent company of O2, which serves as the exclusive provider for the iPhone in the UK.iPhone in the UKHi to all my friends out there, Well it has been an emotional journey over the recent months. We finally have the iPhone in the UK, and I believe this is the start of something special - a revolution in mobile phones in the UK. So now that the iPhone has been launch, where do I take the site. Well we have had a fantastic response with the site getting between 1500 - 3500 hits a day and at its peak - 125,000 hits on the day the iPhone was announced by SJ at the Regent Street Apple Store. We have climbed the rankings in Google and are 3rd, behind Apple (of course!) and iPod.org.uk So my question to you al out there that read the site is, will you still use the site for your iPhone UK information? I have posted a second poll to the right to ask that very question and would be grateful if you would select. Over the recent months, I have tried to give you the latest information and operating the site has been fun, but has come at a cost - I have little income coming in. And I would hate to just cease updates if you are still willing to visit the site for your iPhone UK information. Therefore I have a proposal. I can continue with the updates but the site might only be updated once a day (or twice depending on work!) Is this acceptable to our readership? Please leave your comments as I would like to know what you all would like from the site moving forward - there’s always a rumored 3G iPhone launch to cover…..Over at CNN Money, they are reporting that 100’s of Thousands of iPhones where sold“Peter Erskine, chief executive of Telefonica’s 02 Europe, said the mobile operator has sold tens of thousands of Apple iPhones in the UK since the heavily-hyped multimedia handsets went on sale last Friday evening,” Thomson Financial reports. “In a conference call with reporters Erskine declined to reveal how many iPhones it has sold, as the exclusive mobile network for the handset,” Thomson Financial reports. “He said early sales had been in line with its original expectations and customers had found the new handsets easy to use,” Thomson Financial reports.upgrades to come for the Apple iPhoneApple has confirmed that it has plenty more upgrades to come for the Apple iPhone. “All the complaints and feature requests we’ve had can be fixed and added by software upgrades,” a spokesman for the company told Pocket-lint. The news will come as a relief to new customers who bought the company’s mobile phone over the weekend and may have been disappointed by some of its limitations. Apple representatives told Pocket-lint: “We didn’t want to include something for something’s sake.” Since its launch in the US in June, Apple has been criticised for leaving out some key functionality, like the ability to record video via the included digital camera and greater Bluetooth support beyond voice functionality. “For the average mobile phone most people only use around 10%, Apple didn’t want that to happen with the iPhone.” However some commentators believe that not including all the software features from day one will allow the company to entice new customers over the next couple of months. “They [Apple] aren’t stupid. They won’t want to give you everything at once. You wait, there will an exciting partnership with YouTube that adds video functionality and then lets you upload to the site in no time,” an industry insider told Pocket-lint. Others however believe the answer is more simple than that:. “If the reason to upgrade the software each time is compelling enough, then you are less likely to hack the software, meaning Apple gets to earn the substantial revenue agreement it has with the official operator,” another source told us.iPhone introductionthe CEO of Apple Inc., introduced the iPhone on Tuesday. If you haven't yet seen the video of his announcement, you should take a look. It's an extremely good speech and is likely to make you want your own iPhone right away. I know I do! The product is predicted to have as big an impact on the mobile phone market as the iPod did on the personal stereo market. iPhone introduction - full 90 minutes, requires Quicktime (click "Watch iPhone Introduction") iPhone introduction - first three minutes, via YouTube The iPhone The iPhone is a combination mobile phone, camera, wide-screen multi-media player, and wireless email and web browsing tool. All packaged in one beautifully designed handheld device. It has only one button, the rest is touchscreen. The web browser is a full-scale browser - webpages are displayed the same way as on a desktop computer. The device runs OS X - the Macintosh operating system. Apple has filed over 200 patents relating to the technology. Availability in Germany The iPhone will be available in the U.S. from June 2007. Apple say it'll reach Europe in Q4 2007, i.e. from October 1st. The initial U.S. release will be offered in two configurations: a 4 GB model for $499 and an 8 GB model for $599. Both variations will be based on a two-year phone service contract with Cingular Wireless - the most popular mobile phone network in the U.S.. In Germany there are four mobile phone carriers: T-Mobile, O2, Vodafone D2, and E-Plus. As of today, none of these companies have yet made an agreement with Apple. It is likely, however, that at least the first three, if not all of them, will have agreements to sell the iPhone. In Spain the carrier has already been announced as Movistar - part of the same company as O2. So, we Europeans still have around nine months to wait. When it does finally arrive the prices, based on a simple conversion of the announced U.S. prices, will be 385 Euro and 460 Euro for the 4Gb and 8Gb phones. These will also likely be with a two year phone contract, almost certainly O2, likely other carriers too. iPhones will probably be on sale via eBay, at hugely inflated prices, from June 2007. You could still buy one of these and use it in Germany as an MP3/video player, camera, for WLAN internet access, and PDA functions (calendar, notes, etc.). Only the phone service won't work. It's not yet clear whether the handsets will be locked to a SIM card, or whether you could by the U.S. product and then slot in a German SIM card later. The iPhone age is about more than just dialing the phone and waiting to see if someone on the other end answers. Devices in this new age do more than simply connect you to friends, loved ones, and colleagues. They can also deliver particular types of content tailored to meet your specific needs. iPhone Delivers Customized Content iPhone products come with a variety of features that will change the way you communicate with friends and family, including: Compelling Internet services: iPhone products work with such popular clients as Skype and Yahoo! Messenger with Voice; these clients display real-time contact list and presence information letting you know when the party you want to call is available. Access to personal content: Use your iPhone handset to access music, photos, and live video cameras from sources on the Internet. With the iPhone product family from Linksys, you can do more from your phone than just talk!iPhone was releasedEarlier this year, the iPhone was released to an awaiting public. People lined the streets on the date of its release just to get their hands on Apple’s latest baby. The only downside to the iPhone, so it seemed was the very steep price range. Naturally, such an expensive gadget would need to be insured in some way. In response, people turned and inquired if the AT&T Insurance plan would be available for the iPhone – the sobering answer was: No! There were many perks provided by AT&T that you would not find in other insurance plans. These perks include insurance against accidental physical damage and a lot of other things. So, in the absence of the AT&T insurance, we turn to other insurance providers. There are two known reliable sources for getting insurance for the iPhone and these are: the AppleCare Protection Plan and Square Trade. AppleCare – a short while after the release of the iPhone it was announced that AppleCare will carry a “CarePlan” for the iPhone. For most iPhone owners, this is an answer to their problems. Owners have been looking into a good insurance plan for their iPhone, especially because AT&T does not carry one. The AppleCare Protection Plan may not have some of the features available to AT&T clients, but they still have a lot of things to offer to iPhone owners. The AppleCare CarePlan will extend the hardware repair coverage of the iPhone for up to 2 years from the original date of purchase. The plan is only compatible with iPhones purchased under the Apple Warranty. Unlike the AT&T plans, AppleCare does not insure the iPhone against liquid damage or any accidental Physical damage to the product. In essence, the AppleCare CarePlan only stands to extend the original 1 year warranty. SquareTrade – SquareTrade is one of the better known insurance providers in the market. They provide a care plan that is similar to the AppleCare plan. Square Trade care plans are available at 10% the original price of the iPhone – and that is $49.99 and $59.99, depending on which iPhone is being protected. Square Trade promises that in the event something happens to the unit, they will either replace it or pay the client the amount used to purchase the iPhone. Like the AppleCare plan, SquareTrade plans do not guard against “accidental” Physical damage, but they have released a statement that they will soon be releasing a CarePlan that does. In the event, SquareTrade will undoubtedly be the best bet when choosing a CarePlan for the iPhone.iPhone hackersWith the Zune 2 bringing wireless syncing out of the box, many iPhone hackers are giving the iPhone a little competitive nudge by rigging up some solutions of their own. There have been a couple that have popped up here and there, but the closest to the Zune in terms of ease of use is the one developed by eddanx. It uses the WinAmp plugin ml_ipod, which supports syncing to shared folders. It additionally requires that the iPhone be jailbroken and have SSH running on it. Unfortunately it bypasses iTunes altogether, loosing the functionality of contact, calendar, movie, and phone syncing, but other than that, it works pretty well. So far there isn’t one of these for the iPod touch, but whether you give it a try, let us know. You can get a full set of directions here.Today iApp-a-Day brings you another exciting iphone game, that day Christmas was in the air. that is a pretty simple, yet challenging game that takes use of the iPhone and iPod touch’s accelerometer for full control by the game. The objective of that game is to keep Santa’s sleigh away from iphone GameplayAs colored pie pieces seem in the center, place them in the outer circles to earn points. Pieces can only be placed into circles that have a corresponding open slot. Once all six slots of a circle are filled, the completed pie is cleared from the board. whether a piece is not placed before the timer expires, a life is lost Use the fewest colors possible when forming pies for maximum points as each piece of the same color is worth more than the one before it. Pies completed with a separate color plus earn an additional life. The speed of the timer gradually accelerates, increasing difficulty. Play ends when all of your lives are lost. A Youtube video which demonstrates the Javascript version of Frenzic (running on a desktop browser). It’s got a large screen, a wireless Internet connection, and a touch interface a bit like the bestselling Nintendo DS, which you’d think would make it an ideal gaming platform. But for some reason, in all the avalanche of hype, I’ve read little or nothing about iPhone games. What happened? There are a few tidbits out there, but as yet, more tantalizing than substantial. A few weeks ago, for example, a tech blog reported a rumor that Apple and Nintendo would soon partner to sell games for the iPhone over iTunes. Which would be groundbreaking news, but as yet, still remains unconfirmed. In January there was a lot of early interest in iPhone as a gaming platform, by EA and other publishers– but so far, the only titles on the market seem to be simple indy games that are actually Flash titles converted for iPhone use. (Watch this YouTube video, for an example.) So far, then, the apparent lack of iPhone games seems like a giant missed opportunity by developers, one that we’ll be keeping an eye on at GigaOM. (I fully admit that phone games are not my main forte, so I’m playing catch-up just as much as publishers evidently are.) But I should open the question to all our iPhone-owning readers out there: are you interested in gaming on your gorgeous new Jesus phone? Wait just a tick before you install an NES emulator on that iPhone of yours! (Actually, on second thought, go ahead and install it -- but pay close attention here anyway.) Sister site Download Squad has stumbled upon some pretty damning evidence that Apple is cooking up games for the handset, finding this little gem in iTunes' localization strings: "Are you sure you want to remove the selected game from your iPhone?" Seeing how there aren't really any games to remove at the moment, we can only take this to mean that there are some in the pipe -- which hopefully we won't want to remove, hence Apple's concerned tone in the string. Traditional iPods are now well entrenched in the brain-rotting, time-wasting downloadable app market, so a similar move on the iPhone almost seems like a foregone conclusion, especially considering the endless possibilities afforded by the gargantuan touchscreen and the recent posting of a senior game developer position out in Cupertino. Stay tuned! While you're waiting, maybe you can kill some time with some Bubble Bobble, eh? Update: Apparently, these strings have been floating around the nets for a little while now; our apologies for those that already knew! iphone gamesiGiki.com which announced earlier this month that it would release several games designed for Apple's iPhone around the same time that the device is scheduled for launch, has offered a detailed list of those titles. A total of seven Gikis comprising more than 30 games are each available for 99 days with a $1 donation to the software developer, while six GikiMinis are provided for free by iGiki developers to the iPhone user community. Five GikiPods offers users quick laughs while on-the-go, and are provided as a complimentary addition to the iPhone applications. Gikis currently include "Sink or Swim," "iTrek," "Outer Wars," "Arcade Gikis," "Brain Gikis," "EuroDarts," and the classic Hangman. None of the iGiki games require Flash technology to run, as some are written using AJAX technology while others are exported to QuickTime using FLash track, according to iGiki. Gikis "Sink or Swim" challenges players to save a crew of sailors from certain death by shark attack. Those who don't act quick will see a shark dine on the unfortunate crew left overboard. "iTrek" uses an innovative control scheme that allows players to maneuver a ship across a planet under the constraints of landscape, fuel, and time. "Outer Wars" is a 3D game offering a quick round of shooting space ships while navigating through canyons. "Arcade Gikis" aims to hone arcade-based skills with mini games that include "Baller," "Bust Out," "Elfy," "Foul Fowl," "iEscape," "iHole One," "Space," "Slotz," "Whack," and "XOs." "Brain Gikis" aim to tax the brain and hone mental processes with mini games consisting of "Cup It," "Dealer," "Face," "FruitFall," "iGeo," "Impossible," "iPeg," "iPoker," "iPuzzle," "iState," "gHangMan," "Magic Guess," "Match It," "Turtle," "Wooly," and "WordWap." GikiMinis GikiMinis currently include Icer, iTrek Trial, Prison Break, iTouch, Avalanche, and Music Maker. "Icer" challenges players to destroy a penguin's ice cream bombs before they hit home. "iTrek Trial" is a trial version of the full Giki game listed above. "Prison Break" depicts convicts running wild as players try to bring down the outlaws before they take aim. "iTouch" is a game of speed, endurance, and aptitude that charges players with tapping the center of a target as fast as possible. "Avalanche" forces players to dodge folling cubes by bursting them in colored sets or risk being battered. "Music Maker" enables users to play the drums on an iPhone.Sudoku, Match Three and Collapsing Blocks are the first three games to be released for the Apple iPhone from MacMost. The mobile iPhone games can be played for free by Apple iPhone users by simply using their iPhone to browse to the MacMost website. MacMost is a Apple enthusiast site with news, tutorials and a weekly video podcast. It is produced by CleverMedia, an Internet content company that has created more than 300 Web-based games since 1995. Gary Rosenzweig, founder of CleverMedia and executive producer of MacMost, created the games in anticipation of the Apple iPhone launch, without being able to test the games until the Apple iPhone was released on June 29. Mobile Games for Apple iPhone "I was able to draw on our library of game code and create the games using my best guesses about the Apple iPhone's capabilities," said Rosenzweig. "Then I waited in line all day on Friday so I could be one of the first to get one and to test the games." While the Apple iPhone does not include any game applications at launch, it does allow for third-party developers to make games using the Safari Web browser built into the phone. The Match Three game challenges players to swap objects to line up three matching pieces in a row. It is the same basic concept as most popular casual games. MacMost's game uses apples as playing pieces. The Collapsing Blocks game is another classic casual game type, adapted for the Apple iPhone's screen. Apple iPhone Games - SudokuThe Sudoku game uses the iPhone's touch screen to allow the player to enter numbers on a standard Sudoku board. It features a nearly unlimited supply of puzzle boards, with three levels of difficulty. Rosenzweig said he is planning more games. He intends to keep the games free. "We're working on some card games and other puzzle games," said Rosenzweig. We hope to be updating the game site almost every day in the coming weeks. "Like the games at our main game site, Game Scene, these will be free and we'll eventually support them with advertising." The games can be played by going to the MacMost website and clicking on the "Apple iPhone Games" link at the top of the page.iphone ringtonesApple started selling iPhone ringtones for $2 apiece through its iTunes store last week, but if you aren't afraid of a little tinkering, you can get that "Hey Ya" or "Sexy Back" ringtone without shelling out the extra bucks. Users have to pay Apple $1 for a song, plus an extra $1 to convert that song into a ringtone. Of course, hackers immediately set out to find a way to generate iPhone ringtones for free. In a classic game of cat and mouse, Apple has spent the last few days trying to block iPhone owners from installing free ringtones on their devices -- only to watch hackers come up with workarounds just hours after each patch is released. Apple has continued to update its iTunes software (which syncs with the iPhone to add ringtones) to block the specific loopholes uncovered by the hackers. In fact, iTunes was updated almost immediately after the first loophole was uncovered Friday. Despite Apple's best efforts, the chase continues. The most-popular desktop applications for installing custom ringtones were updated this weekend, in one case only hours after Apple updated its software to block them. Mac users can rely on applications like iToner ($15 from Ambrosia Software), which is a full-featured ringtone manager for the iPhone. Windows users can get similar functionality from iPhoneRingtoneMaker ($15 from Efiko Software). These options feature drag-and-drop ringtone management, including the ability to use just about any sound file and the option to set specific songs to play when specific people call. The latest iTunes update appears to have crippled iPhoneRingtoneMaker for some users, but the developers at Efiko are working on the problem. IToner is currently up to date. Granted, the methods described below may very well be rendered obsolete the next time Apple updates iTunes or the iPhone's firmware. So, to keep the instructions up to date, we've also posted them in Wired's How To Wiki. You can follow along there and help keep the instructions detailed and current as the Whack-A-Mole game continues.ITunes 7.4 The simplest DIY method involves just using iTunes and some free software. Apple quickly disabled this ultrasimple free ringtone method with the release of iTunes 7.4.1, but if you haven't yet upgraded to 7.4.1, this method will work. Shortly after the release of iTunes 7.4 -- which came out last Wednesday, the day ringtones were announced -- users noticed that the main difference between ringtones and regular audio files were their file extensions. Regular AAC files have the file extension .m4a, while ringtones use the file extension .m4r. ITunes 7.4 will automatically create a new folder for storing ringtones in your music library the first time you open a .m4r file, provided you have the "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" option checked. This folder is where you'll want to put your ringtone files, but first you'll need to edit the song down to a suitable size. The size of an allowed ringtone on the iPhone tops out at around 3 megabytes. For Mac users, there are several ways to whittle down your tracks. You could use Apple's Quicktime Pro or Garageband if you have them. You can also edit MP3s in the free Audion 3, which features a nice waveform editing tool. Windows users can edit audio files with the free Audacity. Pick the 20 to 30 seconds you want to use as your ringtone, and save the file as an MP3. Next, add the shortened file to your iTunes library, then right-click on it in iTunes and choose "Convert to AAC." The clip will need to be an AAC file in order to be used as a ringtone. Finally, change the file extension to .m4r, and move the AAC to the "Ringtones" folder in your music library. Since both Windows and Mac OS X like to hide file extensions, the renaming part can be tricky. Make sure you aren't just appending a file extension to the hidden one. On a Mac, choose "Get Info" in the Finder and make sure "Hide extension" is unchecked. In Windows, make sure the "Hide extensions for known file types" option in Windows Explorer is turned off. When you sync your iPhone, you should see the new ringtones displayed in your phone's sound settings. ITunes 7.4.1 Even if you have already upgraded to iTunes 7.4.1, all hope is not lost. First, complete all the steps listed above for version 7.4. Then use this simple trick: Head back into the iTunes music folder and change the extension of your .m4r ringtones back to .m4a. Convoluted, yes, but it does work. For now. More Alternatives Or, rather than mess around with your file extensions, you can also use applications that automate the process. Rogue Amoeba's MakeiPhoneRingtone and AppleGazette's iRing are both free downloads for the Mac. Create the ringtone clip, and these apps will handle the rest. There is another method of getting custom ringtones on your iPhone as well, though it requires using the Jailbreak application and a bit of command-line sauce. Using Jailbreak to unlock your iPhone and installing the SSH application will let you interact with the iPhone's file system just as you would any other external device. You'll be able to install ringtones and much, much more. The legality of all this futzing is still being debated. Some say using a song you purchased (either on a CD or online) as a ringtone does not constitute fair use and may be grounds for copyright infringement. So, proceed with caution. And before you go crazy making a dozen ringtones, we can't help but suggest you consider another ring option: the ever-popular vibrate setting. Like a timeless black suit or little black dress, vibrate is classy, demure and doesn't annoy the hell out of everyone within 20 feet of you. iPhone Download.orgiPhone Download Pro Has Put Together A System For You To Achieve Unlimited Downloads For Your Iphone. We Have Constructed a Database For Mass Downloads For Your Iphone That Will Extentd From Music To Music Videos, Movies & Much More! To use it, of course, you'll need an iPhone that's been hacked to use third-party apps, but that's a small price to pay for quality time with such memorable Nintendo classics as Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga and Mega Man Battle Network. The emulator was co-developed by the guy that made gpSPhone's cousin, a classic NES emulator. Once you have gpSPhone installed, assuming you're willing to jump through the hoops required to unlock your iPhone, you'll need to get your hands on some games. Since the iPhone doesn't have a GBA cartridge receptable (those short-sighted Apple engineers!), you'll need to grab ROMs instead. ROMs are firmware images of cartridge games that can be downloaded and copied to the iPhone for use with the emulator. Only watch it, distributing copyrighted games in this fashion is mostly illegal. That said, there are quite a few home-brew games available as ROMs, like our new favorite, Qwak. Now, if only an Amiga emulator would show up on the iPhone so we can play Lemmings.iPhone browser signatureIn May, we reported that iPhone browser signature has been seen in the wild, including here at MacRumors.com. It appears the mobile browser has seen ongoing updates since that time, and has since graduated from mobile version "1A538a" to "1A543a". Small steady improvements are, of course, expected... but after we discovered this new mobile version, a Google search brought up this Google cached page - now expired ( cache screenshot ) where the iPhone was benchmarked using a mobile download benchmarking tool at BroadbandReports.com. How'd the iPhone do? 157K/second (1262 kbps) to download a 1024 kilobyte file.iPhone skins for Palm TreoCreative designers have created iPhone skins for Palm Treo and other smartphones that anyone can download from the web to make their phone look like the iPhone. Though these skins don't add iPhone like features to your mobile device, Apple is unhappy because the iPhony themes use the actual iPhone icons made from the screenshots available on the Apple website. Therefore, Apple lawyers are having a very busy time typing cease-&-desist letters to skin developers and websites that are hosting the iPhone skins. Apple's lawyers also sent letters to journalists who simply reported on the fact that the skins were available. We are not jumping into any debate here but this iPhone skin story does prove two things about the web: 1. It is virtually impossible to remove anything from the web. The more you try to police a thing, the more popular it gets and new clones surface. [Remember Daniela Cicarelli video clips on Youtube that later surfaced on Google Videos] 2. Linking to sites that host unauthorized copyrighted content may be considered illegal. We have seen that with Fox and now Apple is also following the same path. Their legal team is after bloggers who are trying to spread the word about iPhone skins. One of the letters from the law firm hired by Apple says - "While we appreciate your interest in the iPhone, the icons and screenshot displayed on your website are copyrighted by Apple" - would that mean using iPhone screenshots on blogs is illegal ?DVD to iPhone Video ConverterDVD to iPhone Video Converter is a One-Click, All-In-One solution to convert DVD to iPhone, Tivo to iPhone, DivX movie to iPhone, Xvid movie to iPhone, MPEG video to iPhone, WMV to iPhone, AVI to iPhone, RealMedia to iPhone, etc. The DVD to iPhone video converter does a great job in generating high quality iPhone videos. I have a minor suggestion that would make my surfing experience over EDGE much better. You're using image files to generate the dark-gray rounded 'pill' behind the unread counts. That's all fine and dandy, but I'm finding that on slow connections, about half of my download time is spent getting these 3 images. The display of the whole page is delayed while they load. Luckily, the iPhone's webkit has a nonstandard CSS property that would allow you to get this exact effect with only 1-2 lines of CSS and no images. It's webkit-border-radius, and I think it would reproduce the look of the site with much less overhead. I know nonstandard CSS is scary, but you'll know that everyone viewing the iPhone site will have it. Again, this is a great mobile reader, and I'm impressed how you guys have improved things over time. Love it or hate it, everyone's been talking about it. Even its detractors have to admit that it has shaken up the cell phone industry and influenced the expectations of consumers as to what they want in a mobile phone. Looking at its sleek, colorful interface, it's hard not to fall in love with it. But like most decisions based on emotion, buying one may not be the smartest thing to do -- at least, not yet. Deb Shinder looks at some of the top reasons to resist temptation and pass on the iPhone for now.WiFi on Apple's iPhoneTruPhone, the UK-based creator of VoIP least-cost routing tools for cell phones, is demonstrating the first implementation of VoIP calling over WiFi on Apple's iPhone. The demonstration is occuring at DEMOFall in San Diego. The solution uses the SIP protocol, so TruPhone users can call each other from the iPhone, or call the outside world using SIP or the public telephone network. This will allow TruPhone users to reach Gizmo Project users, for example. This announcement is significant as VoIP calling from the iPhone was previously not possible, even with Apple's own iChat (which on Mac desktops enables VoIP chat. So TruPhone's offering will satisfy an enormous demand and increase the value of the iPhone's WiFi hardware dramatically.YouTube to iPhoneAllRipper YouTube to iPhone is the fastest DVD movie to iPhone video converter software so far in the world. and reliable tools for DVD MPEG2 video to iPhone video format video conversion. There's no grand new interface, no code-scrubbing to make the Window version load quicker, and certainly no support for Linux users. There's not a lot to bother with, period, unless you're a Old World iPhone customer. The biggest change is that iTunes now supports international iPhone activation, in preparation for the iPhone landing on European shores later this week. There's also support for a new music game called Phase, but that's just back-end mumbo-jumbo: running the game still requires buying it first. The iPhone tab in Preferences has been changed to Syncing, and lets users adjust synchronization settings for iPods as well as iPhones. Latest-generation iPod users get a battery meter in the nav next to the connected icon, and besides an assortment of bug-killing and security hole-fixing, th-th-that's all, folks.A Skype client made especially for Apple's new iPhone has just been releasedA Skype client made especially for Apple's new iPhone has just been released. Om Malik has the news on this much anticipated release from SHAPEServices. SHAPEServices makes Instant Messaging applications for mobile devices, and now has built a Skype for iPhone website that allows iPhone users to visit and use Skype through Safari. The service is free for a limited time, upon which time users will have a one time fee to run the application. The iPhone application works the same way in which the PC software works. Users can IM and talk with other Skype users, as well as make and receive SkypeOut calls. Users also have access to see who is logged in and available. Om has said that the application took a few minutes to set up and run, and is easy to use. If there are any DLSers that have tried this application out, please let us know your impressions.iPhone Download ReviewSo now you posses the iPhone, and have mastered its ‘usability’ if you come this far. Apple and Cingular / AT&T have put together a wonderful new piece of technology that is just begging for additional updates. Bear in mind, that even with the hefty price tag, Apple will rake in revenue by pushing straight to the iPhone. After all, you already installed the software, and there’s no need to uninstall and start over. If you actually bought the first iPhone, then you’ll probably want some advice on how to fill that bad boy up without spending so much. iTunes will upgrade, privacy locks will be put in place and prices will always fluctuate. This exciting news means we are now able to gladly welcome all SIMFREE unlocked phone owners to UPGRADE to 1.1.1 if they so wish Further to this, we are very proud to announce, (after some very difficult and lengthy hardware hackery), we were able to retrieve the necessary info to create the world first 1.1.1 unlock solution. We have now tested SimFree v1.6 with phones that have the new Baseband version 04.01.13_G with full success. This now means that SimFree v1.6 release, is now capable of completely restoring/repairing software unlocked "bricked" iPhone. Those of you wishing to repair your phone, please read the following steps. Steps for "un-bricking" your anySim or iUnock iPhones: 1. Follow the iPhone/iTouch dev team steps to bring your phone back to 1.0.2 system (your baseband firmware will still be the newer 04.01.13_G) 2. Register your true IMEI (found engraved on the back of your phone) with our servers through one of our trusted resellers. 3. Power down your phone and REMOVE your sim 4. Power up with the sim removed and Install SimFree.app 1.6 (simplest method is through apptapp installer, see post below) 5. Follow this tutorial to execute the Simfree. app. Here is the direct link to SimFree v1.6: Download SimFree v1.6 Why use iPhoneSimFree, Facts about unlocking with SimFree 1. iPhoneSimFree was the first to release a Software Unlock for the iPhone. 2. iPhoneSimFree Unlock works on ALL versions of iPhone (1.0.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.1.1) 3. iPhoneSimFree Unlock works on ALL versions of Modem Firmware ( even the latest 04.01.13_G ) 4. iPhoneSimFree Unlocked phones can be updated from any version to 1.1.1 safely without bricking your radio and GSM functions (unlike other unlock methods) 5. iPhoneSimFree does not patch your devices firmware ( unlike other unlocking methods ) 6. iPhoneSimFree can FIX all phones that anySim and iUnlock bricked with the 1.1.1 update 7. iPhoneSimFree Unlock is restore and update resistant up to and including 1.1.1Q & A For iPhoneSimFree Users and 1.1.1 iPhone UpdateSeems there is a bit of confusion about our last post. Here are some of the most common questions, with some corresponding answers. Q. Why do you say it is unlocked if you can't activate a non AT&T sim? A. There is a difference between unlocking and activation. Unlocking is related to GSM standards and allowing a sim to be used on different carriers, and activation is something made up by apple to further restrict their users. After upgrading to 1.1.1 the radio of the phone is still unlocked, meaning it can still connect to other carriers, but apple requires the phone be activated to do so. Q. How do you know it is unlocked if you can't activate? A. There are several ways to know this. Firstly, the phone does not report "Incorrect SIM". Secondly the IMEI is correct. Thirdly if you bring up the field test, you can see the provider is not AT&T. And finally (and coolest of all), there are ways to actually call out and receive calls from the emergency call screen. If you can get the baseband to crash (we do it by calling some emergency numbers with no sim in place) and then insert the non AT&T sim, it can pick up a signal and calls (non-emergency) can be placed and received from the emergency call screen on the non AT&T carrier. Q. Why does all this matter, if I can't yet use a non AT&T sim? A. A few reasons. Firstly the phone can still be used by AT&T users after upgrade. Secondly, if apple has patched the methods used to perform the unlock, as long as an activation method is discovered, the phone will work perfectly on other carriers. With other unlocking solutions, if you were to upgrade the phone it would currently be a brick, and if apple has patched the methods to perform the unlock, it would also stay a brick forever..News concerning iPhoneWe have successfully completed a test of the 1.1.1 firmware update on IPSF unlocked phones. We are very pleased to report that the phones are still fully unlocked, and if you are using an original activated AT&T sim, you can activate and use the phone with no issues at all. Unfortunately, currently there is no way to jailbreak/reactivate the phone for use with a sim card other than the original AT&T card. Therefore for our customers who have no immediate need to use alternate providers and are still using their AT&T card, you are welcome to update your phone. For the rest please be patient, as the jailbreak issue is something that affects much more than just the unlocking. The thousands of open source developers who have put a cumulative 10s of thousands of man hours into various apps and tools now have no way to get them onto the phone as well. We are all looking into the jailbreak issue as it affects us all, and we will keep updating our site as well as the open source community at large with any information we can about this. We also tested an AnySim unlocked phone, and after the update it appeared to be relocked. The IMEI was reported as 004999010640000 (see below), and a T-Mobile sim was reported by the phone as an "Incorrect SIM" rather than the new "Different SIM Detected" message. The 004999010640000 issue (Resellers please take note): 004999010640000 is a special IMEI number reported back by a phone in "lockdown" mode. We have seen this a few times mostly in relation to other unlocking methods. We are currently updating our servers to accommodate new customers wishing to recover their phones from lockdown mode, but it is essential that the REAL IMEI of the phone is passed on to our servers, or else the server will not issue the unlock. The real IMEI can be found engraved on the back of the phone or on the back of its retail box. We will update our site when the Servers have been updated to fix lockdown phones.Hackers have worked out how to unlock the latest iPhone firmwareHackers have worked out how to unlock the latest iPhone firmware, 1.1.2, to allow handsets running it to operate on any GSM network. Yet confusion reigns - one popular unlocking app may have been updated 'unofficially'. Firmware 1.1.2 was released this past Friday, just ahead of the UK and German iPhone launches. New European models being sold for use on the O2 UK and T-Mobile Germany networks come with 1.1.2 pre-installed. Methods posted so far involve taking a 1.1.2 handset and downgrading the firmware to the previous version, 1.1.1. Opening 1.1.1 to accept third-party applications - a process called 'jailbreaking' - allows the handset's baseband software, currently at version 4.02.13_G, to be unlocked. Users can then re-upgrade to 1.1.2. Separately, one group calling itself the iPhone Elite Dev Team released on Friday an app called AnySIM 1.2, designed, they claim, to unlock a jailbroken 1.1.2 handset, albeit only ones that have been upgraded - owners of factory-shipped 1.1.2 iPhones are warned not to apply the software. It doesn't work on UK iPhones, the team say. Whatever, a day after the release of AnySIM 1.2, Netkas, an administrator on the Hackint0sh website - home to many of procedures for unlocking past iphone firmware releases - said: "Iphone dev team didn't make AnySim 1.2 for 1.1.2 firmware yet. So any AnySim 1.2 apps for now [are] not from iPhone dev team. So they may (or may not) make your iPhone bricked, beware." The following day, the iPhone/iTouch Dev Team posted a graphical app that takes an iPhone that's been downgraded to 1.1.1 iPhone, jailbroke and upgraded to 1.1.2, then re-jailbreak it. iPhone coder Erica Sadun's experiences with the process can be found here Rival development teams FUDding it out to be first? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, it's a sign how murky the world of iPhone unlocking has become, and we'd recommend waiting for a clearer picture to emerge before attempting these processes.iPhoneUnlockAustraliaDue to popular demand, iPhoneUnlockAustralia is happy to announce the sale of TurboSIM and StealthSIM! We'll have it in stock, shipped from Canberra, and you can pay via PayPal or Australian Bank Deposit! Are you interested in unlocking your OTB 1.1.2 iPhone? Contact us today and we'll put you on the waiting list! TurboSIM/for the 1.1.2 iPhone - Buy it here from Bladox in Australia. The Turbo SIM/StealthSIM has the ability to unlock an iPhone, allowing the usage of other mobile operators other than AT&T in the iPhone. This can be done as the Turbo SIM/Stealth SIM tricks the iPhone into believing that it is operating on the AT&T network even though it is connected natively (not in roaming mode) on another mobile operator. It does this by copying the IMSI and ICCID number of the original AT&T SIM, so when iPhone asks for the legit AT&T numbers, TurboSIM/StealthSIM gives it them instead of the SIM currently in the tray.Unlock the iPhoneThe wait is over. For me that wait was painfully long as I bought an iPhone on launch day only to have to wait until just a few minutes ago to make my first phone call. I passed the time by following the exploits of the guys in #iphone.unlock on undernet who were brave enough to open their iPhone and apply George Hotz’s now infamous hardware hack. But the real juice was in unlocking your iPhone from AT&T without the need to open it. None of that would have happened without the hard work of many different people and groups inlcuding the iPhone Dev Team, the dozens of testers and code wizards in IRC (Daeken, geohot, zappaz, gray, guest184 etc), and of course the guys at iphonesimfree for discovering the buffer exploit that unlocked the phones to begin with. *Editor: This post was modified heavily to include a much more detailed iPhone unlocking tutorial. Read on! So what’s done is done, and the iPhone is now truly unlocked and usable on any carrier, without having to open it. iUnlock was officially released by the iPhone Dev Team but it should be mentioned again that it was the work of well over a dozen dedicated people. Keep in mind that if you expect their to be updates to this stuff, you should make a donation to at least one of the groups I mentioned above. Unlock the iPhone in OS X - 7 Easy Steps I have all the files you need and a quick guide for performing the unlock on OS X below. A huge thanks to my Russian friend (guest184) in #iphone.unlock on undernet for putting the guts of this together before going to sleep. I just tested it and it worked fine for me on my iPhone here in Asia on Thai GSM and TRUE. I unlocked several more phones with others to verify the steps. If you need help post in the channel and I will do my best to assist, but I am no expert! Before you Begin: Restore your iPhone to Apple factory settings and install the 1.0.2 update. This can be done by putting the iPhone into recovery mode. This is done by holding both the select and sleep buttons for 25 seconds while your iPhone is docked. Do this until it reboots and returns with a yellow sign reading: Connect to iTunes. Fire up iTunes. Choose Restore. To confirm your version, go to Settings > General > About > Version on the iPhone. Warning: These tools are not perfect and while it is quite rare, it is always possbile to brick your iPhone when messing with the firmware, and file structure. Also be sure to set your Settings > General > Auto-Lock to Never. You’ve been warned. Step 1 - Jailbreaking with iNdependence You need to jailbreak your iPhone in order to write files to it. There is a lot written about this and it is pretty simple to do (1 click) but it often causes problems. A good tool for doing this is either iNdependence, or iFuntastic. iNdependence works best for me so that is what I will show here. The latest version of iFuntastic (v3.x) installed a lot of uneccesary stuff on my iPhone so I avoided it.Unlock the iPhoneVery late last night, I chatted with Ryan Block of Engadget. At that time, he was happily engaged in making calls on his iPhone using a T-Mobile SIM. Today Engadget announces a full iPhone software-only unlock. According to Ryan, this unlock comes courtesy of iPhone SIM Free.com. I haven't personally tried out the unlock but Ryan writes that he can confirm "100% certainty that iPhoneSIMfree.com's software solution completely SIM unlocks the iPhone, is restore-resistant, and should make the iPhone fully functional for users outside of the US". So what does this mean? It means that the iPhone just went International. You can use any SIM on the iPhone using tools like iASign and iActivator, and with the same limitations: namely no Visual Voicemail or YouTube video (at least not without a hack) and your minutes and data are charged per the plan associated with the SIM. Also the phone number seems to go MIA in iTunes, which lists it as "N/A". The unlock adds a new option to Settings. See the picture at the top of this post. Ryan says you'll be able to use this to select your preferred network and avoid roaming. A new EDGE network settings appears in General > Network, allowing you to enter your carrier's access point name and username/password. Is this method restore and upgrade resistant, as the iPhoneSIMFree guys claim? Ryan factory-restored his iPhone with the 1.0.2 firmware and the unlock stuck around. The iPhoneSIMFree site is pretty light on details. They write that they intend to launch the unlock as a commercial product for both individual and bulk purchase sales. Bottom line: is this for realsies? Ryan and Engadget says absolutely yes. They are standing by their tests. |
